Looking Forward in 2024
Dear Neighbors,
The Bellevue City Council is off and running again for 2024, and I am thrilled to continue our work for all those who call Bellevue home.
A few highlights from last year include leading the effort on the creation of the Keep Bellevue Beautiful program that addresses litter, abandoned shopping carts, and graffiti; bringing forward an ordinance that would make it a crime to knowingly possess or publicly use controlled substances in Bellevue; and led the budget initiative to fully fund our Bellevue Police Department while growing the team by 21 officers that included the formation of a new transit police unit. I also led the effort in Bellevue and throughout the state to combat antisemitism by encouraging my colleagues to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which is an essential tool to identify modern forms of antisemitism and enable the city to respond effectively if it occurs here. We were the first city in the Pacific Northwest to do so.
Now that we are into the new year, I wanted to tell you what my top priorities are for 2024.
Crime Prevention – I will continue my strong focus on crime prevention and public safety for all Bellevue residents. Your family’s safety and ensuring that the men and women of BPD are fully funded, supported, and resourced continue to be my most important issue.
Affordability – Bellevue has become one of the country’s least affordable communities. I am committed to taking concrete actions to reduce the cost of living when it comes to housing and those household goods and services that are impacted by runaway inflation.
Taxes – Families in Bellevue are overly tax burdened. Rather than increasing the tax burden on Bellevue residents, we need targeted budget reductions to ensure that the City continues to fund core services without raising taxes.
Homelessness – We must continue to be proactive in our approach to those experiencing homelessness by providing shelter with wraparound services. Homelessness is a major regional issue, and it’s critical that our approach of compassionate enforcement continues as our guiding principle.
Transportation – The transportation challenges in front of us continue to be daunting. Thus, why I will continue to advocate for a multimodal approach that includes enhanced road capacity, public transportation, and expanded pedestrian and cycling infrastructure while integrating transportation technologies like autonomous shuttles and smart parking.
Accountable to YOU
I am here to serve and listen to you, the residents of Bellevue. Please know that I am always available to you, and I will always fight to make local government what it should be – open, responsive, and inclusive.
As always, I am deeply honored to serve the residents of Bellevue. Thank you for your ongoing support.
In gratitude,
Jared Nieuwenhuis
